Cattle management

Photo Gallery at bottom of page  will continue to be updated

While we keep around 120 stud breeders at “Wajatryn” The bulk of our breeders are situated on forest country about 90km south west of Mundubbera. We pregnancy test each year and Cows that don’t come up with a calf are culled to a fattening paddock at “Lawson Valley”.
All calves are tag identified and recorded.  When weaned they are all weighed and brought to "Wajatryn". We then work them with the horses and dogs. Tailing them out in lane ways.
Following all their vaccinations. Weaners are distributed to different grower paddocks. We grow our weaner bulls out on bullock country closer to Gayndah. Select heifers are kept at Wajatryn. Steers and commercial heifers go to other grower paddocks.

Bulls spend about 6 -8 months in the scrub paddock. They are well grown but not ‘pumped with grain’. We then bring them to Wajatryn and continue their preparation on leaucaena. Winter oats are planted for when leaucaena is done.

Growth rates and weights are continually monitored. If young bulls do not perform they are culled.

National Sale bulls are finished on oats crop with access to Riverina Pellets for the last 6 weeks.

While most of our cattle work is done on horses with quality , intelligent dogs, we can walk or drive into any of our paddocks and have the cattle come around and check us out. This helps when mothering up. For the records. If we run out of time to mother up all calves in holding paddocks at muster, we often pick them up later in the paddock.

Our cattle are also familiar with bikes, although most of our country is not suitable to work with bikes.
